Getting Into the Olympic Spirit With Moscow Mules

The Moscow Mule is perfect on a hot DC summer day, but it works just as well for the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. And here’s my preferred formula, with five easy ingredients and one optional garnish:

  • Moscow mule copper mug
  • Ice, and lots of it
  • chilled vodka, preferably Russian Standard
  • ginger beer –  not ginger ale – preferably Barritt’s
  • fresh lime
  • 1-2 sprigs cilantro for garnish (optional)

Fill the mug with ice to chill, while you’re gathering the other ingredients.

When you’re ready, fill half of chilled mug with fresh ice. Add two shots of vodka. Squeeze in half of lime, and drop into mug. Fill remainder of mug with ginger beer. Approximately two ounces of ginger beer to each ounce of vodka. Add cilantro sprig(s) and stir.

Now you’re ready to face the world … and win the gold.

  1. Somehow this seems much healthier than the Russian-themed cocktail we served at our Opening Ceremonies bash… White Russians (made with Polish vodka, we’re all rainbow here) In my defense, I did substitute soy milk for the heavy cream in mine.
